Hallowell scarecrows embody autumn spirit

There sure is a lot of creative talent in Hallowell. A lot of terrific community spirit, too.

That was clear to anyone who visited downtown Hallowell last week. They found some of the most eye-catching decorations ever. It was impossible to travel down Water Street without a smile. Not even Oz could offer better scarecrows.

We doubt that a crow or even a Cowardly Lion would have been frightened by these scarecrows. They were just too inviting. But that was OK. The goal was not to scare anyone or anything. These scarecrows were an invitation to visit, to enjoy Hallowell, to eat, shop, mingle and have a good time. That's what a Fall Harvest Festival is supposed to be, and this one surely was.

We offer a tip of the hat — a straw hat, of course — to the festival's organizers, artists and supporters. They got the season off to a wonderful start.
