Fire Destroys Slates Restaurant Residents Homeless

A disastrous fire Sunday afternoon in one of Hallowell’s oldest brick structures, the Squire Perley Building, has shuttered one of the city’s most important businesses Slates Restaurant.
Unofficial reports from the scene are that the fire started about 1:00PM in a second floor apartment over the bar and kitchen of the restaurant and spread into the floor above. The alarm was sounded at6 the end of the popular Sunday brunch. Units from surrounding communities joined the Hallowell Fire Department in their attempt to save the structure.
Residents were seen removing belongs from the apartments over the dining room sections of the building.
Little else is known at this time.
